Sinkholes are very serious claims, and also, generally, require very thorough, and often expensive investigation.

Claims for sinkhole are rarely just paid, for a number of reasons. If you suspect you have damage related to a sinkhole, do not expect it to be resolved in a short period of time, both because the claim is complicated, and because the repairs are often very extensive and involved.

When damage is first reported due to sinking, depending on the severity of the damages, it first needs to be determined if you’re even dealing with a sinkhole.

Here are some common damages that beg this question:

Drywall Crack
Stucco Crack
Exterior crack damage
Ceiling Crack

Which ones are settlement and which are related to a sinkhole?

Why does it matter?

Because…Cracks related to settlement aren’t covered by your insurance policy. Cracks, damages, and the more extensive repairs necessary for sinkholes, typically are covered.

If you are actually dealing with a sinkhole, you’ll likely need a geotechnical engineer to take soil samples and run a number of tests to confirm you’re dealing with a sinkhole. Even if you already know you’re dealing with a sinkhole, you’ll likely still need an engineer to provide plans and repair protocols as to how to ensure the repair is a permanent solution and not one that will require another expensive repair in six months.

We have experience with sinkhole claims, construction, and engineering, so you can rest assured that we’re coordinating with the appropriate experts to document and present your claim to your insurance company.

We’re also happy to provide initial evaluations in the event your damages are not related to a sinkhole. Sometimes, another cause is responsible for the damages and might still be covered by your policy.
